Creating Consistent Content

One of the most important, and most overlooked factors to growing your business with live video is CONSISTENCY. Attracting customers and growing your business is about building relationships, and just like any other relationship, you need to put in the time to nurture them.

In this week’s episode of The Art of Online Marketing I talk about the importance of consistency and why it’s important that you…

1. Are going Live on a regular basis, such as once a week, at the same time, and same place,

2. Stay on track with your messaging ad what your put out there in terms of your offers,

3. Set the bar for valuable content and continue to share valuable content.

What to do BEFORE you click GO LIVE!

Live video is an effective strategy to get more visibility, connect with your audience, and position yourself as an expert. However, when you go live, you are going to want to plan it out so that it will be the best that it can be. Today I am going to share some actions to take before you go live to make your live video a success!

Choose 3 Main Points

When you go live, you should prepare in advance what you are going to talk about. Once you come up with the main topic of theme of your video, choose 3 main points that you are going to share with your audience that fall under that theme.

Think of your live like a paper you might write in school. There is an introduction, the body, and the conclusion. In that body, you want 3 main things to share.

Announce when you’ll be going Live

I think that by now, many of us know that if you go live, there will be a replay that your audience can watch if they miss it. However, your live video will be much more successful and reach more people if you get more people watching and engaging while you are live!

Before you go live, announce it so that your potential audience knows to tune in live, or that they are aware of it so they can watch it later.

Get your gear set up

Before going Live, make sure that all of your equipment, tech, and extra tools are set up, tested, and ready to go! Here are the 3 things I do EVERY TIME before I go live.

·         Reboot my laptop so that it has the power to live stream;

·         Make sure my internet connection is stable;

·         Put my kitty in the bathroom.

Can’t wait to see you Live!

How to be Confident on Live Video (Even if you’re an introvert)

I’ve been talking about Live Video for the better par of a year, and one of the objections that I often get is “I could never do Live Video. I’m an introvert”. I get it, because, I’m an introvert too!

Live video is similar to doing a talk or a presentation. How you present your content is just as, if not more important than the content itself. When you present your knowledge with confidence, you come off as a knowledgeable expert. If you are lacking confidence, your audience will question your expertise.

And, obviously, I want you to be confident while you are doing live video so that you can serve your audience and turn them into raving fans of your business!

But, if you are introverted, shy, or generally lacking confidence, you might think it’s a medium that will never work for you, and that my friends is NOT TRUE!

Here are my tips on How to be Confident on Live Video (Even if you’re an introvert)!

1. Plan

Now, the biggest fear for introverts, at least for me, is not knowing what to say. More thoughts are happening in your mind than are coming out of your mouth, and that’s ok. But that means that when you are speaking, either to one person, or a group, the bare minimum seems to be what comes out of your mouth because you feel like you are put on the spot. Then afterwards you have a ton of great ideas that you’re like – why didn’t I say that when I was asked…

When you are doing a Live Video, YOU ARE IN CONTROL. It’s not a conversation where the other person can ask any question in the world, and its not a presentation where audience members can ask questions you hadn’t thought about. You get to talk about exactly what you want.

The best way to get over that fear and make sure you are in control is by planning your content in advance. It helps you feel more confident, because you know what you are going to talk about, and that you are going to cover all of the important points!

2. Live Video Persona

One thing you might not know about me is I am a part time comedian. I am a member of a local improv group. I’m willing to bet you’ve watched some type of comedy, maybe a stand up comedian, or a sketch comedy show, or even an interview on a late night show.

One thing you’ll notice, especially during something scripted like stand up, is how big the character is. Comedians create Comic Personas for themselves – a distinct on stage personality. The persona is an amplified version of themselves. They do not act like a different person, they are just themselves, BUT BIGGER.

When I first started doing live video, I decided to create my own live video persona. I encourage you to

do it too. But, this doesn’t mean acting like someone else, in fact it’s incredibly important to be authentically you, but it means letting your personality out of the box and creating a character of yourself. Your content, how you speak, and how you look should all be in synergy with the live video person that you develop.

For me, it has basically become a habit. Before I click “go live,” I tell myself that I’m the version of me who LOVES being on live video! And guess what? It makes a big difference. And often I can see that difference in video views for when I’m feeling confident, and when I’m not feeling confident. When we’re doing something we love, we tend to smile a lot and project a lot of energy and enthusiasm. That’s me you see in all my videos, but with amplified characteristics. It’s easier than you think. You just need to make a conscious effort.

3. Practise!

And, unfortunately, you’re not going to get away without this one – practise! Going live can feel odd. And that’s because it’s not a natural thing - humans weren’t born with selfie sticks as arms!

Your live videos aren’t going to automatically be great. They most likely will start off crappy. And I don’t say that to turn you off from doing them or to scare you, its just that when it happens, I want you to know that it’s ok, it’s not just you.

I recommend that you start practising without even being live. Turn on the camera app on your phone, turn it to selfie mode, and start recording yourself. It will help you get over the initial weirdness of talking to your own face and seeing yourself on camera as you are talking, which can be a terrifying thing if you’re not used to it.

Give it a watch. Look for what can be improved – WITHOUT being overly critical. Do you say SO a lot, try to reduce that. Are you looking someplace weird, try to correct that. Then practice again.

And again, don’t dwell on this. Give yourself a few days of practise then go for it, and rest assured knowing that it will get better with time!

Happy Live Streaming!

Make your social media content go further

One problem that many entrepreneurs run into, is spending too much time creating content; we are creating weekly blogs, regular lead magnets, social media posts, and more! However, we’re not spending enough time focusing on making sure that content is reaching our audience, which is the entire point of all of this.

We spend too much time coming up with original content every single time, but all of our energy is being poured into the backend, and the planning, and not in the implementation.

In this week’s episode of the Art of Online Marketing, I share with you my #1 strategy to make your content go further, so you can make sure it reaches your audience, and that you have more time to spend on other areas of your business.

5 Live Video Secrets for Building an Engaged Community

86ceecf0-c6fe-4864-abda-c11a43c0ee6c.jpg

Live video is the best way to build a thriving, engaged audience on social media, giving you a consistent flow of leads in your business!

AND

It’s the fastest path to the KNOW, LIKE, and TRUST factor required to build a solid foundation in your business.

When you go live, you can’t hide behind multiple takes or video effects. Your authentic self will shine through and help you make meaningful connections with you audience. (which might sound scary but it’s actually a GREAT thing!) Live Video is the closest thing to meeting you in person.

Just in case you’re not yet convinced how powerful live video can be…

  • 80% of online traffic is now video;

  • Live Video gets 600% more engagement than other videos;

  • Social Media users watch live video 3X longer than other videos.

Sound like good reasons to get started with live video? Keep on reading! In this document I share my top 5 Live Video Secrets for building and engaged community on social media.

1. SHARE VALUABLE CONTENT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

5secrets1.png

We all know that we have to provide value if we want to build an engaged community. Yet surprisingly the internet is filled with entrepreneurs promising “value” when in reality they are using live video as a glorified promotion of their business. That sucks for them, because all it does is piss people off.

This is actually good news for you since it gives you an opportunity to stand out. The secret to providing value is not actually a secret.

First tell your audience something they didn’t know or give them something they can use for a quick win. Bonus points if you do both. If you’re only going to do one, make sure it includes a quick win.

Second, the value you provide needs to be independent of what you are offering them. If they need to buy your product or service to get any value, then it doesn’t count (see earlier comment about pissed off people).

Third, don’t be stingy! You are the expert and you want your audience to see that right away. Wow them with your genuine desire to help and you will increase that ever-coveted “know, like, and trust factor” that you need to convert fans into loyal customers.

Let’s use a specific example to see how all this works. Two personal trainers each produce a live video hoping to connect with potential customers.

The first trainer, Johnny Protein, uses his on-air time to describe all the wonderful benefits viewers will get if they hire him to be their personal trainer (no value).

Kelly Barbell knows that audience time is precious and decides to share 3 specific exercises viewers can use to increase core strength. She provides specific instructions and demonstrates the correct and incorrect way of doing the exercises. Barbell has provided viewers with exercises they can use right now, with no expectation of anything in return.

Question: What information can you share that your viewers can use to create a quick win?

5secrets2.png

2. CONNECT & ENGAGE WITH YOUR VIEWERS

One of the best parts of live video is that you can see who is watching, follow their interactions, and invite questions or comments. This gives you an opportunity to mention people by name and answer questions in real time. This changes the entire experience for you and your viewers. Instead of a one-way lecture, you can create a conversation and make people feel as if they are in the room with you.

Another benefit that a lot of people lose sight of, is the value of the information that flows back to you. Viewer interactions are a great source of inspiration and can give you insights into the areas that your audience struggles with the most. Think of viewer questions and comments as a library of content that you can use to create future videos!

Let’s return to the example of the personal trainers. The first trainer doesn’t even get a chance to engage. Viewers tune in, quickly figure out that the “free session” is a glorified sales pitch and leave with little or no interaction.

Barbell actively looks for opportunities to engage. When she sees names pop up she sneaks in a welcome to a few of them. She takes the time to invite questions and respond to any questions or comments posted by her viewers. Then after demonstrating the last exercise, she asks for suggestions for future live video sessions. She makes it easy for viewers to engage and is well on the way to the “know, like, and trust” relationship.

5secrets3.png

3. DEVELOP YOUR LIVE VIDEO PERSONA!

Many “live video experts” won’t touch this topic for fear of offending or because they feel like they’re saying, “if you are boring, don’t bother with live video”.

Like it or not, no one is going to watch your video if isn’t entertaining! And the truth is, the way you deliver your content is JUST as important as the content itself. Now before you freak out, take a deep breath. It’s not as hard as you might think. For example, believe it or not, I am a quiet introvert type. I know, right? How does a quiet gal like me come across as so lively and outgoing?

When I first started doing live video, I decided to create my own live video persona. I encourage you to do it too - the same way a stand-up comedian has to create a distinct on-stage personality. Now, this doesn’t mean you should act like someone else, it means letting your personality out of the box and creating a character of yourself. Your content, how you speak, and how you look should all be in synergy with the live video person that you develop.

Here’s how I do it. Before I click “go live,” I tell myself that I’m the version of me who LOVES being on live video! (Putting it right up there with puppy cuddles). And guess what? When we’re doing something we love, we tend to smile a lot and project a lot of energy and enthusiasm. That’s me you see in all my videos, but with amplified characteristics. It’s easier than you think. You just need to make a conscious effort.

4. SHOW UP CONSISTENTLY

5secrets4.png

This is another area where so many entrepreneurs fall down. You can produce the best live video content on the internet, and still fail. To build your audience and to keep them coming back, you need to show up on a consistent basis. Got it?

Turning viewers into loyal customers doesn’t happen in one video session. Your future customers need multiple touch points with you for you to gain their trust.

Live video is most effective and beneficial when it is used consistently. Honestly, if you’re not going to make it a habit, for you and your audience, it’s probably not worth the effort.

So, set a schedule and stick to it. Show up on live video consistently (dare I say, once a week) and your audience will grow organically. My live video show, The Art of Online Marketing, goes live every Tuesday morning at 9AM EST. And I’ve been showing up regularly for about 18 months.

5. TELL YOUR STORY

5secrets5.png

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools that every business owner has in their toolbox. Sadly, a lot of entrepreneurs leave this tool in the box. Don’t be one of those people! And it’s easier than you think.

For example, you can use the power of story to give viewers a glimpse into who you are as a person. My regular viewers can tell you all sorts of things about me. Like I love beagles, I run half marathons, and I moonlight as an improv comedian.

You can also use stories to explain why you do what you do, and why you’re passionate about helping your customers. You can even showcase customer success stories and along the way demonstrate how your products or services are making a real difference.

When done right, storytelling can position you brand, your values, and help your stand out from the rest! That’s because we humans are drawn to stories, and we remember them much more than facts and statistics. So remember, every time you go live, tie a relevant story into your larger point.

Now GO!

You are now equipped with some powerful tools to build an engaged community with live video, but more importantly, to turn those followers into loyal customers. I can’t wait to see you go live!

Are you spending TOO MUCH time marketing your business?

How much should I be marketing my business? How much time should I be spending marketing my business on social media?

These are some of the questions I receive from clients, followers, and workshop participants regularly. And at the end of the day the answer is going to be different for everyone depending on where they are at, the activities they partake in, and other variables.

I spend quite a bit of time marketing my own business on social media. In part because, this is how I attract customers to my business. I also don’t teach anything that I do now know first hand, so my own social media accounts are used as guinea pigs to explore how things work, what strategies work, and what don’t.

This led me to question whether I might be spending TOO MUCH time marketing my own business.

Watch the video to learn what I learned when it comes to how much time you should spending marketing your business and see if you are on the right track!

How to improve your content for better engagement

One of the biggest challenges businesses and brands face when it comes to social media is engagement. Because of the Algorithm, a very small percentage of your followers will see any given post (about 2-6%). The way to get over that obstacle, is by getting more engagement on your posts. Engagement is validation for the algorithm and informs it that people want to see your post, so it shows your post to more people.

How do you get better engagement? Watch the video to learn how 😊

Give potential customers a reason to follow you

“How do I get more Likes/Followers?”

I am willing to bet that that’s one of the most frequently asked questions of the decade.

Having a social media presence for your business has become a fundamental piece of your marketing collateral. Not having a presence on social media would be like not having a phone number.

To attract more followers, you need to give potential customers a reason to follow you beyond you wanting to sell to them. By asking them to like your page or follow your profile, that shouldn’t just be an invitation to promote to them.

What are some good reasons to follow you?

Sharing Valuable content

What value are you currently bringing your followers? One of the most effective ways to attract followers is by sharing value. Value means that you are helping your followers overcome some type of challenge. In my case I share social media tips and strategies to help you grow your business. If you are a naturopath, sharing advice on how to overcome common health struggles would be valuable, and if you are a vintage clothing market, then it might be sharing how to pair your pieces to make a perfect outfit.

At the end of the day the value is in the eye of your ideal customers. When in doubt, focus on them, not on your products.

Build relationships

People want to do business with people. Not businesses or logos. Our whole goal in life is to connect with others. Make an effort to connect with your audience on a real, authentic level. Give your audience something they can connect with, ask questions, and engage with them. By building relationships and encouraging conversations, you give your followers a reason to come back.

Business is based on relationships. For long term success you need to build relationships with your customers, future customers, and audience!

Beware of superficial tricks

Remember that when it comes to attracting followers, quality by far outweighs quantity. You are much better off having 500 followers who care about you, your business, and are potential customers than having 10K followers who don’t care and will never buy from you. I mean that’s assuming you want to run a profitable business and not just brag about followers and likes

There are lots of way to get new followers. The ones that feel like shortcuts probably are. Whenever someone recommends you take a certain approach to get followers always ask yourself: who will I attract when I do this? If the answer isn’t “my ideal customers” or some variation of that answer, STOP what you are doing immediately. Your future self will thank you.
