Google + pulls the plug. Is Facebook next?

In case you’ve been living off the grid…

Last week Google announced that it would be pulling the plug on Google +, their very own social media platform, which was launched in 2011 to rival Facebook. While Google is generally a beast when it comes to creating attractive products, this one was a flop. Google+ is shutting down because of low usage and engagement (and not to mention, a major data breach)

But honestly. Google + never really took off. It claims to have 395 million users (in theory more than Twitter). However, 91% of Google+ accounts are empty, meaning they were likely created either as spam accounts or just to access other Google services.

But what does this mean for other platforms? Given that multiple social media sites have recently been under scrutiny, what I want to explore is: is Facebook next? Let’s analyze the situation in 3 key areas: usage, demographics, and business and marketing.

Usage

Facebook, which is currently the largest social network has 2 billion monthly active users. That means every month 2 billion different people are spending time there. Its not me 1 million times and Shawna the other million – its unique users. How does that compare to other social networks? The only other network that comes close to fb is Instagram, which just reached the 1 billion mark. 79% of Americans use Facebook—the platform with the second closest usage percentage is Instagram, at 32%.

Oh, an FYI, Fb owns Instagram. So, anything good that happens to IG is good for Facebook.

Here’s the thing - Facebook has been around for 12, 13 years, so the rate of growth isn’t huge, and that’s because basically everyone already has a Facebook account – I’m willing to bet that you do. But, the numbers are still increasing, not decreasing like some would lead you to believe.

In fact: 400 new users sign up for Facebook every minute.

When it comes to usage: Facebook is not dying

Demographics

When I first joined fb, it was a new and mysterious world where people shared things about what they were doing and photos. It was weird, and I was like what is this – people are going to spend time here? This was in 2006 and I had just started university. Everyone said I needed to join Facebook, so I could connect and stay in touch with all of my new university friends. And this is exactly what it did, for a period of time.

Slowly – or quickly, (I can’t really remember, all this feels like it was just yesterday), anyway the crowd of people on Facebook expanded. Friends at home, younger friends, then older friends, then parents, then grandparents, then great grandparents. You get the idea.

Overall Facebook reaches the widest demographic of people.

Is Facebook “uncool” well – semantics. Usually things are uncool when everybody is doing it. And honestly you probably heard your teen say that Facebook is uncool.

If you are trying to reach teens – then yeah, Facebook probably isn’t the place to reach them, but if your customers are adults, chances are, they are on Facebook, because again, everybody is. And most of those people are checking in at least once a day.

You can pick a “cooler” platform. But you might be the only one there.

Business & Marketing

Now, this is where is gets a bit trickier.

Facebook, a free way to connect with people became an obvious place to market a business. Because well FREE. And then everyone went nuts with marketing their business and Facebook was like whoa – no one is going to want to be here if they get advertised to all the time. So, enter the beginning of fb page decline. The algorithm became stronger to ensure that users were seeing posts that they were interested in and fit organically into the conversation.

This went on for awhile until last January – also known as the Facebook apocalypse. Where Facebook changed the focus to helping users connect with friends and family, and less on discovering new content.

For business this meant a lot less reach for their pages. Which is obviously sucks.

But remember, fb shows your content to those who are most likely to engage with it.

So, is it harder to reach the masses on Facebook? Yes, yes it absolutely is and if anyone says otherwise they are full of it. But, you can still reach the people who want to hear from you. That means your goal needs to be to create amazing content for THEM.

Once you create great content for those who are already paying attention, they will bring their friends along. They might comment on your content, share it, or even recommend it to others.

Yes, your ability to reach lots of people is reduced, but you still have more chance of reaching them than other platforms – depending on your target market of course.

Overall, no, Facebook is no dying, its just evolving.

Marketing your business and getting visible on Facebook is getting harder, but with the right content you can reach the people who most want to hear from you.

The point is: don’t give up on Facebook, because, at the moment, its your best bet. Keep marketing on Facebook, and other social media. Because its never a bad idea to diversify your efforts.

What to do BEFORE you click GO LIVE!

Live video is an effective strategy to get more visibility, connect with your audience, and position yourself as an expert. However, when you go live, you are going to want to plan it out so that it will be the best that it can be. Today I am going to share some actions to take before you go live to make your live video a success!

Choose 3 Main Points

When you go live, you should prepare in advance what you are going to talk about. Once you come up with the main topic of theme of your video, choose 3 main points that you are going to share with your audience that fall under that theme.

Think of your live like a paper you might write in school. There is an introduction, the body, and the conclusion. In that body, you want 3 main things to share.

Announce when you’ll be going Live

I think that by now, many of us know that if you go live, there will be a replay that your audience can watch if they miss it. However, your live video will be much more successful and reach more people if you get more people watching and engaging while you are live!

Before you go live, announce it so that your potential audience knows to tune in live, or that they are aware of it so they can watch it later.

Get your gear set up

Before going Live, make sure that all of your equipment, tech, and extra tools are set up, tested, and ready to go! Here are the 3 things I do EVERY TIME before I go live.

·         Reboot my laptop so that it has the power to live stream;

·         Make sure my internet connection is stable;

·         Put my kitty in the bathroom.

Can’t wait to see you Live!

How to be Confident on Live Video (Even if you’re an introvert)

I’ve been talking about Live Video for the better par of a year, and one of the objections that I often get is “I could never do Live Video. I’m an introvert”. I get it, because, I’m an introvert too!

Live video is similar to doing a talk or a presentation. How you present your content is just as, if not more important than the content itself. When you present your knowledge with confidence, you come off as a knowledgeable expert. If you are lacking confidence, your audience will question your expertise.

And, obviously, I want you to be confident while you are doing live video so that you can serve your audience and turn them into raving fans of your business!

But, if you are introverted, shy, or generally lacking confidence, you might think it’s a medium that will never work for you, and that my friends is NOT TRUE!

Here are my tips on How to be Confident on Live Video (Even if you’re an introvert)!

1. Plan

Now, the biggest fear for introverts, at least for me, is not knowing what to say. More thoughts are happening in your mind than are coming out of your mouth, and that’s ok. But that means that when you are speaking, either to one person, or a group, the bare minimum seems to be what comes out of your mouth because you feel like you are put on the spot. Then afterwards you have a ton of great ideas that you’re like – why didn’t I say that when I was asked…

When you are doing a Live Video, YOU ARE IN CONTROL. It’s not a conversation where the other person can ask any question in the world, and its not a presentation where audience members can ask questions you hadn’t thought about. You get to talk about exactly what you want.

The best way to get over that fear and make sure you are in control is by planning your content in advance. It helps you feel more confident, because you know what you are going to talk about, and that you are going to cover all of the important points!

2. Live Video Persona

One thing you might not know about me is I am a part time comedian. I am a member of a local improv group. I’m willing to bet you’ve watched some type of comedy, maybe a stand up comedian, or a sketch comedy show, or even an interview on a late night show.

One thing you’ll notice, especially during something scripted like stand up, is how big the character is. Comedians create Comic Personas for themselves – a distinct on stage personality. The persona is an amplified version of themselves. They do not act like a different person, they are just themselves, BUT BIGGER.

When I first started doing live video, I decided to create my own live video persona. I encourage you to

do it too. But, this doesn’t mean acting like someone else, in fact it’s incredibly important to be authentically you, but it means letting your personality out of the box and creating a character of yourself. Your content, how you speak, and how you look should all be in synergy with the live video person that you develop.

For me, it has basically become a habit. Before I click “go live,” I tell myself that I’m the version of me who LOVES being on live video! And guess what? It makes a big difference. And often I can see that difference in video views for when I’m feeling confident, and when I’m not feeling confident. When we’re doing something we love, we tend to smile a lot and project a lot of energy and enthusiasm. That’s me you see in all my videos, but with amplified characteristics. It’s easier than you think. You just need to make a conscious effort.

3. Practise!

And, unfortunately, you’re not going to get away without this one – practise! Going live can feel odd. And that’s because it’s not a natural thing - humans weren’t born with selfie sticks as arms!

Your live videos aren’t going to automatically be great. They most likely will start off crappy. And I don’t say that to turn you off from doing them or to scare you, its just that when it happens, I want you to know that it’s ok, it’s not just you.

I recommend that you start practising without even being live. Turn on the camera app on your phone, turn it to selfie mode, and start recording yourself. It will help you get over the initial weirdness of talking to your own face and seeing yourself on camera as you are talking, which can be a terrifying thing if you’re not used to it.

Give it a watch. Look for what can be improved – WITHOUT being overly critical. Do you say SO a lot, try to reduce that. Are you looking someplace weird, try to correct that. Then practice again.

And again, don’t dwell on this. Give yourself a few days of practise then go for it, and rest assured knowing that it will get better with time!

Happy Live Streaming!

Make your social media content go further

One problem that many entrepreneurs run into, is spending too much time creating content; we are creating weekly blogs, regular lead magnets, social media posts, and more! However, we’re not spending enough time focusing on making sure that content is reaching our audience, which is the entire point of all of this.

We spend too much time coming up with original content every single time, but all of our energy is being poured into the backend, and the planning, and not in the implementation.

In this week’s episode of the Art of Online Marketing, I share with you my #1 strategy to make your content go further, so you can make sure it reaches your audience, and that you have more time to spend on other areas of your business.

Are you spending TOO MUCH time marketing your business?

How much should I be marketing my business? How much time should I be spending marketing my business on social media?

These are some of the questions I receive from clients, followers, and workshop participants regularly. And at the end of the day the answer is going to be different for everyone depending on where they are at, the activities they partake in, and other variables.

I spend quite a bit of time marketing my own business on social media. In part because, this is how I attract customers to my business. I also don’t teach anything that I do now know first hand, so my own social media accounts are used as guinea pigs to explore how things work, what strategies work, and what don’t.

This led me to question whether I might be spending TOO MUCH time marketing my own business.

Watch the video to learn what I learned when it comes to how much time you should spending marketing your business and see if you are on the right track!
