Live Video is not Improv

If you are new here, or maybe haven’t been paying attention – I am a member of a local improv group. The catch 22 comedy crew. What is improv? It’s a type of comedy where there are no scripts, only guidelines and scenario, and the rest is made up on the spot. It’s a lot of fun, really, and it can be hilarious.

For some reason, there is a misconception floating around that live video is improv – impromptu and made up on the spot – but that is very far from reality. When it comes to anything business related, improv is generally a bad idea.

What should you do instead? Here are 3 things

Create an outline

Now we could say that the opposite of improv, is having a script. Before you go live you should take the time to decide what you are going to talk about and write it out. It doesn’t need to be written out word for word (in fact I discourage that because it’s better if things are more loose and natural).

Decide what you are going to talk about, a few key points, and then add a few bullet points for each point. This will not only let you walk through in your head what you want to talk about before clicking GO LIVE, but it can serve as a guide for you while you are sharing.

PS: There is no shame in peeking at your notes while you are live, as long as you aren’t reading them word for word!

Have a structure

A few months ago, I fell into a hole. This was a hole of watching Full House – the original – for hours at a time. And apart from how 90s everything was, do you know what I noticed? Every single episode followed the exact same formul. It starts with a sweet quick laugh, intro song (ahhh), set up, conflict, then resolution.

Why do they do this? Because it’s a show structure that works, and its easy to repeat over and over again.

You want to do that same with your live videos – pretend you are the producer of Full House and create a show structure that you can use over and over again.

Your show structure should include an introduction, main content, and a wrap up. Other things include time for engagement, a call to action, and a one liner of what you video is about

Tie it into the bigger picture

Are you going live just for the sake of it? Don’t. It’s not going to pay off and really, who has time for that. Tie your live videos into the bigger picture when it comes to your business.

Does your industry have “seasons” or different topics of interest at different times – use that as a base.

Are you planning some type of event – use that theme to create content leading up to it.

Launching a program, course, or business, reverse engineer your content to align with your launch.

Just “going live” isn’t going to get you anywhere, you need to do it strategically – add value and have a plan, and tie it into the other goals that you are trying to accomplish in your business.

Live streaming has hit an all-time high! No surprise there considering that live video is the best way to increase your visibility, grow your audience, and make more sales. And of course some token stats:

Live Videos are watched for 3x LONGER than regular video
Live Videos receive 6x more engagement than other videos
And live videos receive 1200% more organic reach than other types of posts

However, you have probably noticed that most of the videos that pop up in your newsfeed SUCK! And videos that suck are going to negatively impact your business, repel those who may have been your dream customers, and be a colossal waste of time, energy, and money.

That is, of course, not the fate I want for you. Join me for this free online training and learn:

Please don’t do THIS on Live Video

By going live, you are opening yourself up to a little bit of risk. We might do something that isn’t “optimal” or that makes our videos less than they could be. And sometimes we make mistakes because we just don’t know or realize, and we learn from it. (I’ll be sharing some of those mistakes with those who signed up for this training.

But what I’m going to share with you in this video is more like: HOW COULD YOU THINK THAT WAS OK??

Eating Kraft Dinner while waiting for viewers

In case you’ve never gone live… Once you are done being “live”, your video is saved as a video on demand that you viewers can watch as they please. When they watch the replay, they watch from 0 seconds.

One time I stumbled upon a live video, it was the replay, and this is how it started:

“Hello everyone! We’re going live a little bit early today. Let’s just wait for everyone to join in”. Next that person proceeded to sit back and eat a bowl of Kraft Dinner!

Why would you eat Kraft Dinner on live video!?

It’s really important that you 1. Realize that the replay viewers watch your video from the beginning, and 2. That the majority of your viewers are actually going to be replay viewers. When you are doing your live, keep that in mind. Don’t only cater to your live viewers, or you will alienate the rest!

Going live in a bikini

A really cool thing about Live video is you can go live from anywhere and give your viewers a little sneak peek into your life. Even on vacation or while travelling.

But please, oh please, if you are a business coach, DO NOT GO LIVE IN A BIKINI.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a bikini. On the beach.

But in a live video? No. The only people who should be going live in a bikini are:

People who sell bikinis

Models who are going to be seen in a bikini

And, well, that’s about it.

The general rule for dress (and makeup) in a live video is to ask yourself this: would I wear this to a client meeting?

Would I wear a bikini to a client meeting? No. Never. Would I show up with my hair a mess and no makeup. Again, I wouldn’t.

Other various activities

I’ve seen some other odd things happen in live videos that you shouldn’t do including:

  •  Walking around you room looking for a hair elastic, then proceeding to do your hair while sharing business & branding advice (again, if you are a hair stylist, go ahead, otherwise, don’t!)

  • Going live while lying in bed or on a couch.

  • Driving while on live video.

The thing is, anyone who shares social media of live video advice is probably always telling you to be yourself, to be real, to be vulnerable. But let’s not cross that line of being your authentic self, into TMI.

You don't HAVE to do Live Video

Has anyone ever told you that you HAVE to do live video? Unfortunately, I’ve been hearing snippets of conversations and comments in Facebook groups that entrepreneurs feel like they have to go live. And what happens and you feel pressured? Well, your videos aren’t going to be any good.

Look, I love live video, and I really do believe that it can benefit the majority of entrepreneurs, especially service-based entrepreneurs. But, Live Video isn’t a magic pill. Hitting the live button isn’t going to magically make money rain down on you like a 70s game show money booth. You need to know why you are going live.

Here are my top favourite things about live video:

It’s easy (compared to other types of content)

I first started getting into this world of online marketing, I played around will all types of content.

This included things like edited video. And if you’ve ever edited video, you know that it can be tedious. Not to mentioned that you end of taking 25 takes and then realize: oops I’ve done nothing all day except get way too much footage of this one thing.

I’ve also created infographics, which was kind of fun, but again, a lot of work, working with visuals which I am not great at, and most people are not. I’ve also created written blogs which are still a lot of work to create, edit, post, and people really only SKIM THEM.

With live video it can be relatively easy. You click live and go. HOWEVER, you do want to plan out what you are going to say before that – the idea of live videos being impromptu is a myth.

I get to interact with you fabulous people!

Interaction is the absolute main benefit of live video, and one that a lot of marketers tend to forget. They go live for promotional reasons, algorithms, etc. But the power of live video is that you can interact with your audience, IN REAL TIME. That is powerful, because its as close as you can get to in person interaction (at this moment in the space time continuum).

Here’s the thing. I live in rural nova scotia. When you think of nova scotia, you think rural, add a few dozen more cows, 200 more fishing boats, and 8 million more trees, and that is where I live. The point here is, I really don’t get to interact with like minded people a lot. That makes it a huge benefit for me.

Interaction and engagement with your audience is great for lots of reasons including, building relationships, taking future customers from cold leads to warm leads, learning from your audience (what they struggle with, want to know, and more).

And well, hey, engagement helps you in terms of the algorithm, which is never a bad thing. But it can’t be your only reason for doing things.

Live video has completely changed my business.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this, but doing a weekly live video exponentially grew my business and changed it for the better.

Part of that is a natural outcome of the fact that when I started doing lives was around the time that I pivoted an went all in with social media. But it’s not only that.

Going live weekly had gotten me tons of exposure, the opportunity to connect and engage with people that I never would have otherwise – both clients, influencers, and colleagues.

Live video has given me a voice and a platform. It’s the foundation that I’ve built my business on that has allowed me to leverage that into speaking opportunities, clients across north America, connections across the world, and so much more.

I do a live video every single week with few exceptions. This is partly habit at this point. But sometimes I wonder - why would I NOT go live. It’s the perfect opportunity to share value, increase my visibility and connect with my audience. Isn’t that what we all want?

So, no. You don’t HAVE to go live. But why wouldn’t you?

Live Video! Where is it a thing?

Every week I go LIVE for The Art of Online Marketing live show. The show originates as a Facebook Live stream. Most of my audience watches me on Facebook, either live or the replay. Facebook Live is a great platform, it helps you better connect with the people you are ALREADY connected with (on Facebook).

Facebook Live replays can live indefinitely, you can schedule your live, you can download the video and re-purpose it, and it’s easily shareable all over Facebook - in groups, on your timeline, and more.

I’d say at this moment in time – Facebook live is the most popular live platform. But, there are some other great platforms that have live video built in such as...

Instagram

YouTube

Periscope (Twitter)

Watch the video to learn more about these live video platforms!

Creating Consistent Content

One of the most important, and most overlooked factors to growing your business with live video is CONSISTENCY. Attracting customers and growing your business is about building relationships, and just like any other relationship, you need to put in the time to nurture them.

In this week’s episode of The Art of Online Marketing I talk about the importance of consistency and why it’s important that you…

1. Are going Live on a regular basis, such as once a week, at the same time, and same place,

2. Stay on track with your messaging ad what your put out there in terms of your offers,

3. Set the bar for valuable content and continue to share valuable content.

What to do BEFORE you click GO LIVE!

Live video is an effective strategy to get more visibility, connect with your audience, and position yourself as an expert. However, when you go live, you are going to want to plan it out so that it will be the best that it can be. Today I am going to share some actions to take before you go live to make your live video a success!

Choose 3 Main Points

When you go live, you should prepare in advance what you are going to talk about. Once you come up with the main topic of theme of your video, choose 3 main points that you are going to share with your audience that fall under that theme.

Think of your live like a paper you might write in school. There is an introduction, the body, and the conclusion. In that body, you want 3 main things to share.

Announce when you’ll be going Live

I think that by now, many of us know that if you go live, there will be a replay that your audience can watch if they miss it. However, your live video will be much more successful and reach more people if you get more people watching and engaging while you are live!

Before you go live, announce it so that your potential audience knows to tune in live, or that they are aware of it so they can watch it later.

Get your gear set up

Before going Live, make sure that all of your equipment, tech, and extra tools are set up, tested, and ready to go! Here are the 3 things I do EVERY TIME before I go live.

·         Reboot my laptop so that it has the power to live stream;

·         Make sure my internet connection is stable;

·         Put my kitty in the bathroom.

Can’t wait to see you Live!

Are you spending TOO MUCH time marketing your business?

How much should I be marketing my business? How much time should I be spending marketing my business on social media?

These are some of the questions I receive from clients, followers, and workshop participants regularly. And at the end of the day the answer is going to be different for everyone depending on where they are at, the activities they partake in, and other variables.

I spend quite a bit of time marketing my own business on social media. In part because, this is how I attract customers to my business. I also don’t teach anything that I do now know first hand, so my own social media accounts are used as guinea pigs to explore how things work, what strategies work, and what don’t.

This led me to question whether I might be spending TOO MUCH time marketing my own business.

Watch the video to learn what I learned when it comes to how much time you should spending marketing your business and see if you are on the right track!

Facebook watch, The Blue Jays, and the future of live video

Something you may not know 'bout me is, I am a huge Blue Jays fan! (I even named my dog Tulo). This week I am discussing the Jays and Live Video.

How do these 2 topics overlap, you might ask? Last week, Facebook Watch – a new(ish) FB video platform, had exclusive rights to broadcast the Jays game against the Royals, and this was, of course, broadcast over Facebook Live. What does this mean for Baseball fans, live streamers, social media users, and everyone in between? Watch today’s episode to find out!

It starts tomorrow! The Live Video Formula
