Live Video! Where is it a thing?

Every week I go LIVE for The Art of Online Marketing live show. The show originates as a Facebook Live stream. Most of my audience watches me on Facebook, either live or the replay. Facebook Live is a great platform, it helps you better connect with the people you are ALREADY connected with (on Facebook).

Facebook Live replays can live indefinitely, you can schedule your live, you can download the video and re-purpose it, and it’s easily shareable all over Facebook - in groups, on your timeline, and more.

I’d say at this moment in time – Facebook live is the most popular live platform. But, there are some other great platforms that have live video built in such as...

Instagram

YouTube

Periscope (Twitter)

Watch the video to learn more about these live video platforms!

IGTV: How it works and where it fits in the Instagram Landscape

Have you heard of IGTV?

If you’ve logged into Instagram recently, you will probably have noticed some new buttons and notifications. A big orange tv button next to where you get your DMs and orange notifications telling you so-and-so just posted a video to IGTV.

IGTV, which is short for Instagram Television, was released to all Instagram users last week. In this new feature, users can upload longer form videos (between 15 seconds and 10 minutes) to the platform.

In this video I'll explain how the platform works and where it fits into the bigger IG landscape!

How the algorithm works: Instagram reveals its SECRETS!

A few days ago, during a media tour at its headquarters in San Francisco, Instagram (which is of course owned by Facebook) shared with its guests the factors that determine what posts each user sees in his or her feed. The three main factors are: Interest, recency, and relationship.

Since 2016, Instagram has not been chronological; what you see is determined by a “secret algorithm”. Even though there was TONS of backlash - Instagram says relevancy sorting has led to its (800 million) users seeing 90 percent of their friends’ posts and spending more time on the app. While we were able to decipher some of the information about how that algorithm works, the inner functioning’s have been kept secret. This makes Instagram the first platform to share their top-secret information.

I’ve share some info with you in the past about how algorithms, including the Instagram algorithm, and how they work, here is an updated version straight from the horse’s mouth! And luckily for us, nothing here will be earthshattering. It’s all very similar to what was suspected, but now we can confirm some of those theories.

The Big 3

Instagram continuously monitors your activities on it’s app, so that it can show you posts that you will most care about. This mean that every users’ feed is different based on their activities. There are 3 primary factors that decide what you will see:

1.       Interest:  The algorithm sorts the posts of those you follow based on your past interactions with similar content.

2.       Recency: More recent posts are given priority over something a few days or weeks old.

3.       Relationship: You will be shown content shared by those you are closest with (in the eyes of Instagram). This is determined by activities such as liking, commenting, or being tagged together in photos.

How can you use this info to improve your visibility and reach? Watch the video to get the whole scoop!

The Low Down on Instagram Live: 5 Things you Should Know!

This week on The Art of Online Marketing I continue with the Instagram theme and chat about Instagram Live. Instagram live is AMAZING for all the same reasons why live video is amazing, including more visibility, more relationships building, and more engagement. It let’s you casually show up on the screens of your audience and gives them a better look into your life!

But, Instagram does have its own nuances and quirks that make it a bit different than other live platforms.

1. Behind the scenes content

This is one areas where I find there is a big difference between how brands use Instagram live and FB live. On FB, when you are scrolling through the newsfeed, you often see a lot of videos, like the one you are watching right now, where it’s a figure sharing informational content.

On Instagram, most of the lives you see are people giving you a behind the scenes look into their business or life. They might be at an event, they might be telling a story, they might be on location, or so on. It’s a lot of what you might call “life streams”.

There isn’t a lot of educational content, like the type you see on Facebook, what I like to call a “show”. Most are using it as a sneak peek.

Why? There could be a few reasons.

-  Instagram Live isn’t really big yet, so it could be that marketers haven’t hopped on and ruined it yet (Just Kidding!)

- The potential to reach people appears to be lower. You can’t share lives like you can in FB. The lives don’t show up in the newsfeed, it’s a lot more isolated. If you have a great live it may show up in the explore tab, but there is more of a disconnect…

2. You can’t go live through 3rd party software

Instagram is really picky about it’s API. The only way you can go live is on the Instagram app.

This means no fancy branding, no screen share or anything else you might add with software. It is truly meant for you to be off the cuff and on location.

3. However, adding a guest is super easy!

It’s built into the platform. You can invite a user to join you, or a user can request to join.

I once had a random person ask to join a live once. It was super weird. I didn’t know who they were even and thought I might end up with a chat roulette situation. But, the point is you can easily bring in guests on IG live

4. Limit of one hour while live

This is an area where each platform varies greatly! On Instagram, you can go live for up to one hour.

To give you an idea, on FB you can go live for 4 hours and Periscope doesn’t appear to have a limit.

5. The replay lives in stories for 24 hours

If you choose to save the broadcast, your Live will live in your story for 24 hours. Then disappear off the face of the planet. Instagram does archive your stories to use in your highlights if you wish to, but for some reason doesn’t save lives.

When Instagram live first rolled out, it was live only. Meaning, if you didn’t watch the video live, you didn’t watch it at all! This can create some urgency to make your audience watch. But apparently that wasn’t working out so great, so now you can save it to your story.

There is still some urgency because unlike FB, you can’t just be like, “oh I’ll watch it later”, because it does go away.

Instagram Stories (for Business!)

Instagram stories might seem like something that is for teens, but it’s also a great way to show some behind the scenes and moments in your business that you don’t necessarily want to live forever in your profile (or aesthetically don’t quite match). They can also help you show off your personality a bit more in a way that you might not be doing with your profile.

Another benefit is, drumroll please: it’s chronological!

Since 2016, Instagram’s newsfeed has not been chronological, it’s been determined by an algorithm. And well this happens because Instagram keeps growing and the volume of content does as well.

But stories are chronological. The latest story appears as the first bubble. So, it’s a great way to stay top of mind! Stories are also the first thing at the top of Instagram when you log in. Prime location.

IG Stories are popular! After just one year, Instagram reported it had 250 million daily users of Stories, versus 166 million for Snapchat. Businesses are using Stories to drive engagement: 1 in 5 stories posted by a business receives a direct message from a follower, and more than 50 percent of business accounts created a story in July 2017.

Create your story:

Click on your bubble on your home screen to add a story if you don’t have a current one if you do it will show you your existing story(ies). If you have an existing story, you can click the camera in the top left corner to create a new story.

Now here you take a pic or a video that you want to share for the next 24 hours. Both have a max of 15 seconds.

Then click (+ your story). And Congratulations, you’ve created an Instagram story! And again, click on your bubble to view your story and see how many people have seen it.

BUT. That was pretty anti-climatic. So, let’s look at how you can add some jazziness.

FORMATS

When you open your story camera, you have a sliding menu at the bottom that allows you to choose different formats.

Normal: regular photo or video. To take a picture click on the big circle or hold it to record a video of up to 15-seconds.

Boomerang: a looping video that plays forward and backward over and over again. You can only capture a few seconds, but if you time it right it can be lads of fun 😊

Superzoom: you have a few different zoom types. Dramatic, Bounce, Beats, TV show. You click on the music note to change it.

Rewind: Plays your video in reverse.

Hands free: another way to take a video but you don’t need to hold your finger down on the button to record. The camera rolls until you time out at 15 seconds (or stop it)

On the menu above that, you can choose a photo from your camera roll, turn flash on or off, flip the camera, and then here are your face filters. They are live – meaning you preview them here and need to choose before you take the photo.

FILTERS

Once you take a photo you can swipe through various filters here. Generally, they are just colour filters.

STICKERS!!!

This is my favourite part of Instagram stories, the stickers, because of the interactive elements.

There are 3 sticker elements I want to direct your attention to: location, hashtag, and gifs. To get to stickers you click on this smiley post it guy.

HASHTAGS: these hashtags are searchable. You can use the hashtag stickers, you can do rainbow or white. Doing this allows you to show up in a search.

LOCATION: you can add locations to your story. Click on it and it searches near you. It lets you appear in the search/explore tab for more visibility.

GIFS: Instagram recently partnered with Giphy to give users the ability to use animated GIFs in their stories. Gifs give your story another dimension. One thing to keep in mind. Less is more. You don’t want 8000 stickers at once with hashtags and locations etc. But there are some options to help you stand out a bit 😊
