You don't HAVE to do Live Video

Has anyone ever told you that you HAVE to do live video? Unfortunately, I’ve been hearing snippets of conversations and comments in Facebook groups that entrepreneurs feel like they have to go live. And what happens and you feel pressured? Well, your videos aren’t going to be any good.

Look, I love live video, and I really do believe that it can benefit the majority of entrepreneurs, especially service-based entrepreneurs. But, Live Video isn’t a magic pill. Hitting the live button isn’t going to magically make money rain down on you like a 70s game show money booth. You need to know why you are going live.

Here are my top favourite things about live video:

It’s easy (compared to other types of content)

I first started getting into this world of online marketing, I played around will all types of content.

This included things like edited video. And if you’ve ever edited video, you know that it can be tedious. Not to mentioned that you end of taking 25 takes and then realize: oops I’ve done nothing all day except get way too much footage of this one thing.

I’ve also created infographics, which was kind of fun, but again, a lot of work, working with visuals which I am not great at, and most people are not. I’ve also created written blogs which are still a lot of work to create, edit, post, and people really only SKIM THEM.

With live video it can be relatively easy. You click live and go. HOWEVER, you do want to plan out what you are going to say before that – the idea of live videos being impromptu is a myth.

I get to interact with you fabulous people!

Interaction is the absolute main benefit of live video, and one that a lot of marketers tend to forget. They go live for promotional reasons, algorithms, etc. But the power of live video is that you can interact with your audience, IN REAL TIME. That is powerful, because its as close as you can get to in person interaction (at this moment in the space time continuum).

Here’s the thing. I live in rural nova scotia. When you think of nova scotia, you think rural, add a few dozen more cows, 200 more fishing boats, and 8 million more trees, and that is where I live. The point here is, I really don’t get to interact with like minded people a lot. That makes it a huge benefit for me.

Interaction and engagement with your audience is great for lots of reasons including, building relationships, taking future customers from cold leads to warm leads, learning from your audience (what they struggle with, want to know, and more).

And well, hey, engagement helps you in terms of the algorithm, which is never a bad thing. But it can’t be your only reason for doing things.

Live video has completely changed my business.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this, but doing a weekly live video exponentially grew my business and changed it for the better.

Part of that is a natural outcome of the fact that when I started doing lives was around the time that I pivoted an went all in with social media. But it’s not only that.

Going live weekly had gotten me tons of exposure, the opportunity to connect and engage with people that I never would have otherwise – both clients, influencers, and colleagues.

Live video has given me a voice and a platform. It’s the foundation that I’ve built my business on that has allowed me to leverage that into speaking opportunities, clients across north America, connections across the world, and so much more.

I do a live video every single week with few exceptions. This is partly habit at this point. But sometimes I wonder - why would I NOT go live. It’s the perfect opportunity to share value, increase my visibility and connect with my audience. Isn’t that what we all want?

So, no. You don’t HAVE to go live. But why wouldn’t you?


Live streaming has hit an all-time high! No surprise there considering that live video is the best way to increase your visibility, grow your audience, and make more sales. And of course some token stats:

Live Videos are watched for 3x LONGER than regular video

Live Videos receive 6x more engagement than other videos

And live videos receive 1200% more organic reach than other types of posts

However, you have probably noticed that most of the videos that pop up in your newsfeed SUCK! And videos that suck are going to negatively impact your business, repel those who may have been your dream customers, and be a colossal waste of time, energy, and money.

What to do BEFORE you click GO LIVE!

Live video is an effective strategy to get more visibility, connect with your audience, and position yourself as an expert. However, when you go live, you are going to want to plan it out so that it will be the best that it can be. Today I am going to share some actions to take before you go live to make your live video a success!

Choose 3 Main Points

When you go live, you should prepare in advance what you are going to talk about. Once you come up with the main topic of theme of your video, choose 3 main points that you are going to share with your audience that fall under that theme.

Think of your live like a paper you might write in school. There is an introduction, the body, and the conclusion. In that body, you want 3 main things to share.

Announce when you’ll be going Live

I think that by now, many of us know that if you go live, there will be a replay that your audience can watch if they miss it. However, your live video will be much more successful and reach more people if you get more people watching and engaging while you are live!

Before you go live, announce it so that your potential audience knows to tune in live, or that they are aware of it so they can watch it later.

Get your gear set up

Before going Live, make sure that all of your equipment, tech, and extra tools are set up, tested, and ready to go! Here are the 3 things I do EVERY TIME before I go live.

·         Reboot my laptop so that it has the power to live stream;

·         Make sure my internet connection is stable;

·         Put my kitty in the bathroom.

How to Schedule a Live Video on Facebook

In this week’s video, I show you how to schedule a live video on Facebook!

Scheduling your live video on FB can be beneficial for a few reasons:

1.  You inform your audience that you will be going live

One of the best ways to make sure that your audience tunes in and watches your live video, is to make sure they are aware that you will be going live! Scheduling your live gives them that heads-up. Is will also convert the time zone so that there is no confusion about when to tune in!

2. Reminders

The notification that Facebook creates when you schedule a live video also gives your audience the opportunity to sign-up for reminders. These reminders will send notifications just before you go live to those who subscribed to make sure they don’t miss out!

Scheduling your post also enables a “pre-stream lobby”, where your audience an wait for the stream to begin.

3. You can share the stream where you will be live

The most beneficial aspect of scheduling a live video, is that the post that Facebook creates to notify your audience, is where you will actually appear LIVE in the date and time that you chose. That means that anyone who wants to see you live can go to that post and they will be able to watch you live from the beginning. You don’t need to create a new live, and your audience doesn’t miss out on the first couple of minutes trying to find the live stream.

You can take the link of the post and share it! Since this is where you will appear live, you can give your audience the exact link where you will be showing up live, instead of sharing the post after the fact.

Bonus: You can set up a bot

There are 2 ways that you can set up a bot in this situation.

The first, is sending a message to all your subscribers encouraging them to watch live. Now that you’ve scheduled the post you can share the EXACT LINK where they can watch!

The second is to set up a comment bot in relation to your call to action. When you do this, you choose a keyword that your audience needs to type in the comments, when they do that they will get an automated message sharing the offer you mentioned. You can only set up this type of bot on an existing post, so scheduling it gives you the ability to do that!

NOTE: While you can schedule your live directly from your page, you can’t actually stream to that post natively from Facebook. You need streaming software to allow you to do so.

Live video can work for you – EVEN if you don’t have a huge following!

I only have a small following. Will Live Video work for me?

I get asked this question ALL THE TIME. Every time I do a training session, at least one person will ask this question. And the answer is: YES!

Here’s why.

At the end of the day the number of followers or likes you have isn’t really important, it’ the intent behind the click. It is much more valuable to have a small, engaged audience than it is to have a massive audience that couldn’t care less.

By going live, you will create meaningful relationships with the audience that you already have. When you consistently share valuable content, you gain their trust. There is something about being able to see and hear you, your voice, your tone, all in real time, without editing or censoring, that helps people connect with you on a new level that isn’t really possible with other formats. It’s the closest you can get to having a face to face conversation!

Your social media presence will naturally grow from doing consistent lives. Going live is algorithm friendly; you get a much higher reach when you go live than any other type of content. This means more of your followers will see your post, AND new people who aren’t following you yet see your post. Which makes organic growth of your page super simple and easy!

What’s the difference between Live video, Native Video, and Video Links

If you’ve logged onto any social media sites lately, you will have noticed that there is TONS of video! Video is currently more than 1/3 of the content that we consume while we’re online, and this trend continues to grow. Video content is an essential medium in 2018, and it will continue to be vital in 2019 and beyond.
